Creating an "Instant" Online Business
(continued)
A Clear Website Strategy:
First, why do you want them to come to your site? (Getting more
business isn't good enough!) If you don't have a clear path for
them to take when they get there, your visitors won't beat one for
you! Do you want them to place an order? Make a phone call or email
you? Ask for a quote? Order a catalog? Get their customer service
questions answered? All of these can lead to sales. You can have
several choices, or paths, for your visitors. Just make sure the
breadcrumbs are clearly laid.
Also, make sure the mechanism is in place for them to follow your
directions. If you want them to place an order online, make sure
you have a secured site. This is as simple as asking your website
host company to provide the service, or contacting VeriSign and
purchasing an SSL (secured socket layer) certificate. This gives
your customers peace of mind that it's safe to order from you online.

By the way, if you are going to accept orders on your site, you
need a merchant account that allows you to take orders online. You
may run your current business without a merchant account, but you
need one to participate in e-commerce. Unfortunately, many credit
card companies and banks frown on online transactions. so what do
you do?
First of all, avoid the schlock-shops that send you unsolicited
email ("Accept Credit Cards!"). In most cases they're working from
a rented office today, their garage tomorrow. Probably the largest,
certainly the one that embraces e-commerce the most, is US
Merchant Systems. This company has a streamlined program that
can get your online business up and running quickly, with encrypted
software that assures your customers of secure transactions.
To be blunt, if you don't accept credit cards on your site or in
your business, you are losing money! An estimated 157 million Americans
(roughly three out of four adults) are packing plastic. According
to Forrester Research, credit card purchases through e-commerce
will jump from the current $22 billion to $350 billion by 2002.
That's a ten-fold "increase" you DON'T want your business to miss
out on that!
Alan Rothman with US
Merchant Systems understands how important a dependable online
merchant account is to your overall web strategy, and he can help
you get your site card-ready fast.
